About Ashley.
As a painter, I am inspired by both beauty and emotion within a messy world. My paintings explore this fusion through a collision of colours and texture.
Starting with a blank canvas, I paint from a place of no intention but rather a feeling and a curiosity about some element, place, or scene. I select my colour palette and splash the colours onto my canvas. As I see the colours and combinations appear, a direction for the piece emerges. This is often where my colours become muddled and messy, and creates the backdrop of my story.
I use palette knives, brushes, sponges and rollers to create shapes, textures and movement. Most of my work uses heavy-body acrylic, as its stiff properties are more easily texturized.
In the finishing details, I lighten my paintings with warm whites to create negative space and emphasize colours and details, as well as horizontal and vertical cut lines to draw the eye through the story. Through these details, my paintings weave a tale of hope and joyfulness.
